Description
Crockett's Leathercloth Works War Memorial is a large memorial originally located at the Leathercloth Works, now positioned on Abbey Road. It stands on a Portland stone pavement without the original steps and round stone balls that were at its corners.
The memorial features a rectangular Portland stone pylon with an overhanging cornice on a moulded base. The cornice has a two-stepped base that supports a carved lion couchant, which faces north-west. Each corner of the pylon is adorned with clasping buttresses that display the dates 1914 and 1919 at the top and 1939 and 1945 at the bottom on the north-east and south-west faces.
Both the north-east and south-west faces of the pylon have large rectangular panels that are slightly raised and suspended from swags, with fasces carved in relief. The main dedication on the south-west face reads "IN MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR FREEDOM 1914 – 1919" followed by 16 names. The later dedication on the north-east face states "IN MEMORY OF THOSE/ SERVICE AND CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES/ WHO LOST THEIR LIVES/ 1939 – 1945" with 10 names.
On the south-west face of the base, there is a badly eroded inscription that reads "THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY/ THE DIRECTORS OF THE LEATHER CLOTH COMPANY LTD/ IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL FIGHTING 1914-1919."
The memorial is situated between two large raised flowerbeds, which contain three trees in low walled planters behind. These brick-built flowerbeds and planters are not of special interest.
