Description

The Tramway Workers War Memorial is a war memorial dating from around 1920, designed by J.F. Richards and carved by A. Elfes & Sons. It is made of Portland stone and features a plinth consisting of three steps, with obelisks at each of the four corners on the lowest step. The pedestal has a moulded base and a cornice that is supported by scrolled consoles on corbels. The front face of the memorial displays a laurel wreath that encloses the inscription: "sacred to the memory of West Ham Tramway Employees who fell in the European war 1914-1919." The baldacchino includes a moulded thin-section canopy with mutules, which is supported by three unfluted Tuscan columns and one square pier. The square pier is inscribed with the names of those commemorated.
