Description
Essex Lodge is a house built around 1840 that incorporates parts of the late 17th or early 18th century Essex House. The building features rendered walls and a red tile pitched roof, designed in the Tudor style. It has a basement and three storeys, with two windows on the ground and first floors, and one window in the gable facing the road. The windows are square-headed with drip mouldings, and the gable is adorned with ornamental bargeboards. Notable elements from Essex House include a richly carved shell-hooded entrance located within a later gabled porch on the north side, as well as early 18th century wrought iron boundary railings and a gateway that includes a lampholder. Inside, there is a good stone corniced chimney-piece featuring a bold architrave, voussoirs, and a keyblock, which bears the crest of the Willyams family.
