Description
Number 42 is an end of terrace house located on Balaam Street in Plaistow. It was built in the mid-18th century, with early 19th-century and late 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of multi-coloured stock brick, featuring red brick quoins, a band, and dressings, while the ground floor is painted. It has a double-pitched roof and stands three stories tall with a semi-basement, containing three windows.
The entrance features a wooden Doric doorcase with attached columns that support a modillioned broken pediment. The round-arched doorway has an architraved head, keystone, and impost bands, along with a panelled door and fanlight. Access to the entrance is via steps with cast iron railings. The late 20th-century windows have original segmental arched heads and red brick dressings. A red brick dentil cornice is located beneath the coped parapet.
The rear facade was altered in the early 19th century to include a two-storey bowed bay. Inside, the property retains much of its original and early 19th-century panelling and cornices, as well as an early 19th-century stair with a column newel.
