Description
Gallions Hotel is a Grade II* listed hotel built between 1881 and 1883 by architects George Vigers and T R Wagstaffe, designed in the style of Norman Shaw. It features red brick construction with roughcast on the first floor and tiled roofs.
The building stands four storeys tall, with the main entrance located on the south side above wine cellars. The roughcast first floor is adorned with a plaster frieze created by Edward Roscoe Mullins. The windows are mullioned and transomed, divided by glazing bars, with paired and bracketed windows at the first floor level. The third storey overhangs and is characterized by three tile-hung gables featuring fishscale patterns and plain bargeboards. The principal range is separated from the east wing by a shallow mullioned and transomed bay window that extends from the basement to the first floor. A ground-floor window is topped with a cornice head that supports a broken pediment with an urn. There is also an elaborate wrought-iron corner bracket, although the sign is missing. The north elevation includes an open balcony at the ground floor.
Inside, the hotel boasts a notable interior with diagonal timber bracing of considerable size on the ground floor. An oak staircase features enriched balusters and newels. The main saloon contains a large timber bar and retains original fittings.
