Description
The Sacred Heart Convent is a substantial and detailed house built in 1856, although it has earlier origins. Designed by John Thomas, the building features a stucco exterior and a slate pitched roof with a parapet. It is three stories high and has a five-bay central block that includes a full-height canted bay window. On either side of the central block are two-story wings, which are only slightly lower and consist of three bays. The right wing is recessed and has an advanced one-story quadrant wing in front, which was formerly a conservatory and is adorned with applied Corinthian columns.
The entrance is square-headed and features Doric half columns on the left bay of the central block. The main block has square-headed windows on the ground and first floors, while the right wing has similar windows. Most of the other windows are segmental-headed. The building includes architraves, sash windows, and plate glass. There are stucco bands between the storeys and a modillion cornice below the balustraded parapet. The garden front showcases a Doric colonnade on the ground floor. Additionally, there is a service wing that is two stories high and has dormers facing west. The interior retains several notable features, including a staircase, a carved fireplace, stencilled and plasterwork ceilings, and inlaid marble floors.
