Description

The monument to Louisa Clarke is an early 19th-century chest tomb located in Lee Old Churchyard. It is constructed of red brick and features yellow stone inscription panels set into the sides, topped with a stone ledger slab.

The churchyard is home to many significant monuments that highlight the area's Georgian history as a retirement location for City merchants and individuals associated with the Greenwich and Deptford shipyards. At the center of the churchyard are the remains of the tower from the former medieval Church of St Margaret, which is listed as Grade II. The current Church of St Margaret, built between 1839 and 1841, is located to the south side of Lee Terrace and is listed as Grade II*. The churchyard has later tombs that were mainly used between the 1840s and 1870s, with a decline in use following the opening of Hither Green Cemetery in 1873.

The tomb of Louisa Clarke is notable for its early 19th-century design and the distinctive yellow stone inscription panels, which contribute to its significance as a commemorative monument. It is also grouped with other contemporary tombs in the area, such as that of Elizabeth Walker Morris, which share similar materials of interest.
