Description
The Church of St George, located on Vancouver Road in Catford, was built between 1878 and 1880 by architect William C. Banks, funded by George Parker of Lewisham House. This church features an aisled nave and chancel that ends in a polygonal apse. At the west end, there is a low apsidal baptistery situated between entrance porches, along with a prominent north tower that was raised in height in 1887 with a modified design. The church also includes a southeast vestry.
Constructed from Kentish ragstone rubble, the building has a slate roof. The nave consists of five bays with a clerestory that displays double trefoils and a quatrefoil design below, along with traceried windows. The west end features a central base window with the baptistery protruding between two gabled porches. The impressive northeast tower has four stages, an octagonal turret, buttresses, and quatrefoil ornamentation on the parapet. The bell stage includes double trefoiled louvred apertures and lancets below, except for a traceried window on the first stage. The chancel, which has an apsidal end, is adorned with arched windows and buttresses, while the southeast vestry has a gabled roof.
Inside, the wooden roof was replaced after a fire in 1976. The nave capitals exhibit fine naturalistic carving, and both the circular font and pulpit are notable examples of their type. The west rose window features stunning stained glass by Henry Holiday from 1900, depicting Christ, cherubim, and seraphim in vivid reds, blues, and golds. Additional windows and wall decorations were created by P. Bacon and R. Corbould of Hemming & Co.
