Description

Sunnydene is a house dating from 1868-70, designed by J F Bentley for W R Sutton, founder of the Sutton Housing Trust. The house is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and a clay tiled roof, and is built in a Tudor-Gothic style incorporating some decorative "Queen Anne" detailing. It comprises two wide bays, with the bay on the left projecting and extending over two storeys and an attic. The projecting bay features a full-height square element with five-light stone mullioned and transomed windows. There is a row of brick paterae and decorative brickwork in the gable peak, and similar brickwork to a top frieze around the left bay. This frieze extends to form the parapet of the right bay, where the attic floor is set back behind a roof terrace. On the ground floor, the left bay incorporates a corner window, followed by a wide brick buttress, featuring a stone head carved with a sunburst and the word 'AVE', flanked by stepped brick corbels that support the bay projection. An entrance porch with a two-centred arch and a door featuring linenfold panelling is situated next to the buttress. The right bay has two-light windows, each with different detailing. A rainwater head is positioned on the right-hand side of the building. Tall brick chimneys are present, featuring pilasters and cornices.
