Description
Brockwell Hall is a gentleman's suburban villa built in 1816 by D. R. Roper, currently used as refreshment rooms. The building is two storeys tall with a basement and features three bays on the entrance front. It is constructed of greyish yellow brick with ashlar dressings, including the basement, cornice, blocking course, and panels that display a Greek fret pattern below the windows. The centre bay is recessed, while the outer windows are in full-height projecting sections. The first-floor windows have gauged flat brick arches, with the central window set in a segmental arched recess. All windows have been replaced with sash windows that include glazing bars; the ground floor windows are tripartite and feature console brackets beneath a dentil cornice and patterned plaster tympanum under a segmental relieving arch.
Access to the entrance is via five stone steps leading to a prostyle Tetrastyle Ionic central porch, which has a balustraded balcony above. To the right, there is a mid-19th century two-storey and basement extension with four windows and a hipped slate roof. The garden front showcases a central projecting bow with three long casements leading to a terrace, accessible by a central curved flight of steps. A later wing features a canted bay with a first-floor balcony adorned with ornamental ironwork and a swept lead roof. Inside, the villa retains period features, including a room with murals of rustic scenes painted around 1897 by Henry Strachey.
