Description

The former St John’s Church of England School, built in 1853, is an irregular building in the Tudor style, designed by Benjamin Ferrey. The school comprises a central range with projecting south-east and north-west wings. It is one storey high with attics. The construction is red brick with Portland stone quoins and dressings. The roof is pitched and slated, now coated with bitumen, and features tall brick chimneys that break the eaves. There are several gabled porch projections, and the entrance doors are pointed-arched with hoodmoulds, set within irregular-block stone jambs. Chimneys project with offsets and are quoined. Blank stone escutcheons are present in the gable ends. Later extensions were added to the north-west.
