Description

This is a large terrace of six houses, built in 1860 by J.T. Knowles, situated on the north side of Clapham Common. Originally known as Knowles Terraces (Nos. 48-52), the houses are each three windows wide and feature five storeys plus a basement. The end houses are designed as pavilions, distinguished by their tall roofs covered in slate, reflecting French Renaissance style. The houses are constructed of grey brick with stucco dressings. These dressings include a deep, moulded and modillioned eaves cornice, decorative strings, a first-floor balcony with openwork panels depicting leaves, and similar openwork foliage screens above doors and windows. A patterned cast iron rail on the third-floor balcony matches the top rails of the pavilion roofs. The windows are sash windows. Those on the ground, first, and top floors are round-headed and set within round-arched recesses accentuated by moulded architraves. Cast iron area railings are present.
