Description
The Church of St Margaret is a tall church built of red brick with stone dressings. It features an octagonal west turret with spirelets, low pent aisles, and gabled porches at both the north and south ends. There is a low, canted baptistery projection at the west. The church has tall, gabled transepts and a chancel that includes a short gabled Lady Chapel to the south and an organ chamber to the north. The high-pitched tiled roofs are topped with a bell-turret at the crossing.
Inside, the austere interior consists of a five-bay nave supported by piers made of new red sandstone. The timber roof features ogee curved braces. An ornate pulpit with a sounding board is present, along with a marble-lined sanctuary that has a mosaic floor. The wood reredos, dated 1909 and possibly Flemish, includes panels depicting the crucifixion, Christ in Majesty, saints, and bishops.
