Description
The Church of St Matthew, built between 1822 and 1824 by C. F. Porden, is a Grade II* listed building located on Brixton Hill. This church is designed in the Greek Revival style and features a preaching box with an east tower. It is constructed of pale yellowish brick, accented with stone dressings and Roman cement.
The west portico is tetrastyle in antis, supported by fluted Doric columns. It has three tall battered doors with enriched panels, set within eared moulded architraves, and cast iron boot-scrapers by the doors. The church has five-bay sides adorned with pilasters made of Roman cement and an entablature. The windows are battered and also feature eared architraves, while a stone plinth runs along the base.
On each side of the building, there are stairs leading down to the crypt entrance, which is marked by a pedimented doorway enclosed by strong, double wrought iron gates. The stone-faced east end showcases a wide projecting central tower bay with a window, and doors are set in recessed side bays. Above the entablature, the tower features a square bell stage with Doric screens below an octagonal "Tower of the Winds," topped with a low conical roof that has a crown and cross.
Inside, the church has a wide gallery that wraps around three sides, featuring a Doric organ case at the west. A tall screen of two Doric columns stands before the east window, and the original pewing remains in place, along with several pleasing memorial tablets.
