Description
The memorial sculpture is a bust of Sir Henry Tate, created by Thomas Brock in 1905. It features a bronze bust that is larger than life, depicting Tate in contemporary dress and looking to the left. The front of the bronze socle has a cartouche displaying the initials H and T, while laurel branches are carved on the back of the socle.
The bust is mounted on a tall limestone pedestal, which has shell carvings at the base and decorative frames, cartouches, and acanthus leaves at the top. The front face of the pedestal is inscribed with the following text: ‘SIR HENRY TATE / BARONET / UPRIGHT MERCHANT / WISE PHILANTHROPIST / BORN 11 MARCH 1819 / DIED 8 DEC 1899.’ The rear face of the pedestal reads: ‘ERECTED BY / PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION / 1905.’
