Description

Nos 1-10, Canning Place form a symmetrical terrace of ten semi-detached villas linked together. The houses were built around 1837-9; Nos 1-5 by John Inderwick and John Robert Butler, and Nos 6-10 by George Hinton. They are constructed of stucco, with slated, hipped roofs that have overhanging eaves. Nos 2-9 are two storeys with a basement, with recessed two-storey linking wings containing the entrances. Nos 1 and 10 are three storeys with a basement.

Each of Nos 2-9 has two windows, and an additional window above the entrance in each linking wing. The entrances have stucco surrounds consisting of pilaster strips with simplified pediments; the surrounds to Nos 1 and 2 feature moulded architraves. All entrances have panelled doors and overlights. The ground floor windows of Nos 2-9 have console bracket cornices and lugged sills, while the first-floor windows of Nos 1 and 10 have console bracketed pediments and cast iron balconies. Plain stucco bands define the ground floor and first floor levels, with the exception of the linking wings. The wings have cornices and blocking courses, while Nos 1 and 10 have dentil cornices and blocking courses.
