Description
Nos 42 to 46 on St James's Gardens are a symmetrical terrace of pseudo-detached and semi-detached houses built between 1847 and 1851 by John Barnett. The houses are constructed of stock brick and stucco, standing three storeys high with a basement. Each house features three windows, including a recessed bay that connects with the adjacent houses. The ground floor and basement are finished in stucco, and the ground floor has round-headed windows with architraves and archivolt bands. Stone balconies with low cast iron trellis balustrades are present, along with a cornice above the ground floor. The first and top storey windows are also architraved and corniced, with cill bands at the top storey. A modillioned cornice is found at the blocking course, and porches at the outer bays are accessed by steps, featuring round-headed panelled doors. The cornice of No 46 has been altered. This terrace is part of a unified architectural scheme that includes Nos 1-24 and 47-54.
