Description

Mall Chambers is a well-preserved example of improved industrial dwellings constructed between 1865 and 1868, designed by J Murray. The building is built of yellow brick with stone dressings, standing five stories tall on a corner site. It features three main bays on each side, with the central two bays showcasing coupled square-headed windows separated by chamfered stone mullions. The end bays incorporate coupled arcades leading to the staircases, while the corner displays a triple arcade with a staircase situated behind it. The ground floor is rusticated, topped by a heavy cornice supported on consoles above the fourth floor. A balustrade defines the roofline. These dwellings were originally intended for a social class slightly above ordinary mechanics and labourers.
