Description

The Church of St John Notting Hill, also known as the Church of St John the Evangelist, is a church built in 1845 by architects J H Stevens and G Alexander. It is constructed from Kentish ragstone coursed rubble with Bath stone ashlar and is designed in the Early English style. The church features an aisled nave, transepts, a crossing tower, and a broached stone spire that rises to 150 feet. The lower chancel consists of two bays.

Inside, the church has an arcade supported by thick columns and a boarded roof. There is a west gallery with trefoil-headed balustrading, and the original pews are still present in both the nave and the west gallery. The west window contains a quatrefoil of mid-19th century stained glass, while the north wall of the nave features a lancet window with stained glass depicting St Cecilia, created by an unknown artist. An original glazed octagonal light is located over the crossing, and the original wooden pulpit has been relocated to the north transept. The east window, designed by C E Kempe in 1890, shows Christ flanked by St Michael and St Gabriel. The reredos was designed by Sir Aston Webb, with figures created by Emmeline Halse. The chancel retains an encaustic tiled floor, a tessellated floor, and marble steps. There are several wall monuments, including one dedicated to Philip Edward Webb, the son of Sir Aston Webb, featuring a rebus of spider webs. This church serves as a central feature in the planned layout of Ladbroke Grove.
