Description

This is a terrace of six semi-detached villas, located at numbers 22 to 44 Richmond Avenue. They were likely built around 1845. The front is constructed from yellow stock bricks laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with a stucco ground floor treated as ashlar and stucco dressings. The roofs are slate, hipped, with projecting eaves and brick chimneys. The design follows a side-hall entrance plan, incorporating a staircase. The architectural style is Neoclassical.

The buildings are three storeys high, with two windows in each villa, plus an additional window over a recessed linking entrance bay, which is irregular in design and detail and was likely added in the late 19th or early 20th century. Full-height stucco pilasters run up the upper floors, carrying an entablature with a projecting eaves cornice. Steps lead to recessed entrances in the outer bays, with variations in design between the entrances to numbers 22 and 44. These entrances feature moulded cornices, stylized rounded pilasters with a decorative top element (a patera), and original four-panelled doors with studs. Most windows are 6/6 sashes, except for number 24, which has full-length 4/4 sashes on the first floor, and number 34, which has 1/1 sashes dating from the 20th century. Gauged brick flat arches feature above the upper-floor windows. The first floor has a stucco band, and the sashes are fitted with cast iron window guards—number 24 has a floral pattern. A stucco entablature with a plain band and projecting cornice tops the buildings, with numbers 22 to 24 featuring a stone coping.

Iron railings run along the front walls of numbers 24 to 44 and enclose the basement areas beside the entrances to numbers 30, 32, and 34, as well as covering the basement of number 42. The interiors were not inspected but are said to retain original features.
