Description

Numbers 23-61 (odd) and attached railings are a terrace of houses dating from approximately 1825-30. They are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond, with stucco detailing. The houses are four storeys high with a basement, and each has three windows, except for numbers 25-41, which have a two-window arrangement. Numbers 23-29, 41-49, and 57-61 project by one brick’s thickness. The basement and ground floor are stuccoed, the ground floor featuring banded rustication. Steps lead up to elliptical-arched entrances, each with Greek Doric columns supporting a coved cornice enriched with anthemion ornament. Each entrance has a fanlight with varying degrees of decorative glazing and a panelled door of original design. Number 23 has an entrance within a recessed full-height bay, with a prostyle Greek Doric porch and a replacement entablature. Number 25 lacks columns to the doorcase; number 37 has an altered fanlight and door; number 41 lacks decorative glazing to its fanlight; number 55 has a prostyle Greek Doric porch with a replacement entablature and sidelights to the doorcase; and number 61 has an enclosed single-storey porch within a recessed full-height bay to the right, incorporating Greek Doric engaged columns, an entablature, an overlight, and panelled doors of original design. Segmental-arched windows are visible above the bay at number 61. The ground-floor windows are elliptical-arched, while the upper windows have flat arches with gauged brick heads. The first-floor windows, representing the piano nobile, possess elaborate iron balconies, except for numbers 37 and 41-49. A moulded stucco entablature runs above the second floor, decorated with a palmette frieze on numbers 41 and 49. The mouldings are missing on numbers 25 and 53, and are interrupted on numbers 55 and 61. An attic storey is topped by a parapet, with a moulded stucco band in places. Stacks are located on the party walls. Cast-iron railings are present to the area.
