Description

The Samuel Lewis Building, consisting of flats 601 to 614, is a block of flats completed in 1910, with a date of 1909 noted on the rainwater heads. It was designed by Joseph and Smithem for the Samuel Lewis Trust. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring dressings of artificial stone and roughcast, with roofs made of artificial slate.

This five-storey block is part of a larger estate comprising six parallel blocks, with the five southernmost blocks being identical in design but not in orientation. The northernmost block, which includes flats 601 to 614, is shorter and has a different design. All windows are flat-arched, with sash windows throughout, except for those in the staircase bay, which are casements.

The central staircase bay features a flat-arched entrance beneath a bracketed canopy, with three-light mullioned windows on the first and third floors. There are canted bays on either side, adorned with stone window surrounds and cast-iron window guards across four storeys. The building has deep eaves that extend over the middle bay and a canted dormer in the mansard roof. Flanking the central bay are ranges of three windows, with the central windows being shorter and positioned under a shaped and banded gable. On either side, slightly set back, is a one-window range, which appears altered on the ground floor, with the third floor rendered and a dormer in the mansard roof. The rear elevation is stepped in plan and includes a large lift block inserted in one re-entrant angle.
