Description

These boundary walls and railings form part of the Samuel Lewis Trust estate, located on Liverpool Road and Laycock Street in Islington. Constructed between 1909 and 1910, they were designed by Joseph and Smithem. The walls extend for approximately 100 metres along Liverpool Road and 70 metres along Laycock Street, and are built of brown glazed brick and artificial stone. The walls have a concave profile, with plain cast-iron railings filling the cavity. Square piers with corniced ogee heads mark the boundaries. Five sets of gates provide access to the courtyards between the estate buildings in Liverpool Road; the octagonal gate piers are banded with stone and have ogee heads. The first third and fifth gate piers from the south have been rebuilt with a new, low curved wall to allow for vehicle access.
