Description

Numbers 1 to 10 Stonefield Street comprise a terrace of ten semi-detached villas, built around 1828. The villas are constructed of brown and beige stock bricks laid in Flemish bond, with simple stucco dressings. The roofs are hidden by a parapet, with party wall and end brick stacks. The design incorporates a side-hall entrance plan.

Each villa has three storeys and a basement, with two windows and a recessed entrance bay. Steps lead to coupled, linked entrances. The entrance to number 1 is a single storey; numbers 2 and 3 are two storeys; and numbers 4 to 10 are three storeys. The doorways feature fluted quarter columns supporting a corniced head, with an original 6-panelled door to numbers 2 and 3 (replaced in the 20th century) and a plain 20th-century fanlight. The upper storeys of the entrance bays vary in height, detail, and construction. Ground-floor windows are 6/6 sashes with gauged brick round-headed arches and curved and radial glazing bars. Upper-floor windows similarly feature 6/6 sashes set within gauged brick flat arches. A stucco sill band is present on the first floor, running the length of the sashes, set in arched recesses linked by stucco impost bands. Individual cast iron balconies with palmette and Vitruvian scroll pattern decorate the railings. The terrace is topped with a plain brick parapet with stone coping. Cast-iron area railings are attached, although some are 20th-century reproductions. The terrace forms a group visually connecting Cloudsley Square with Londsdale Square.
