Description

Nos. 2 to 5 Mylne Street are a group of four terraced houses built between 1828 and 1829. Designed by William Chadwell Mylne, they were constructed as part of the New River Estate, situated on the eastern slope of a hill approaching Claremont Square. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick in Flemish bond, with banded stucco to the ground floor and stucco dressings throughout. The roofs are obscured by stacks. They follow a side-hall entrance plan, with four storeys and a basement, each house featuring two windows. Steps lead to an elliptical-arched entrance, featuring pilaster jambs, a corniced head, a plain fanlight, and a panelled door. The ground floor windows are 6/6 sash windows. Above, the first floor has sashes set within arched brick recesses, linked by stucco impost bands, and feature cast-iron balconies with Vitruvian scroll and anthemion detailing to the railings. Some rebuilding of the upper floors has occurred. The houses are topped with a plain brick parapet featuring stone coping. Attached cast-iron railings with urn finials complete the composition.
