Description
Numbers 6A and 6 to 11 are two semi-detached houses located on the east side of a hill that connects Claremont Square to Myddelton Square. They were built between 1828 and 1829 by William Chadwell Mylne, who was the Surveyor for the New River Estate. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick in Flemish bond, featuring a banded stucco ground floor and stucco dressings, with roofs that are obscured and party-wall brick stacks.
These buildings have a side-hall entrance plan and rise four storeys with a basement, each house having three windows. The symmetrical facade shows windows that decrease in height as they ascend. Steps lead up to a segmental-arched stucco entrance, which includes a doorway with pilaster jambs, a corniced head, a patterned fanlight, and the original panelled door. The windows are adorned with gauged-brick flat arches and feature 6/6, 3/6, and 3/3 sashes throughout. The ground-floor sashes have cast-iron window guards, while the first floor has a stucco sill band that is incised with 'Mylne Street' at the sides of 6A, 6, 7, and 8. The inner bays have full-length sashes and individual cast-iron balconies with railings.
There has been some rebuilding on the upper floors, which also feature a stucco cornice above the second floor and a brick string course above the third floor. The buildings have a plain brick parapet with stone coping. Additionally, there are fine attached cast-iron railings with acorn finials, along with a fine cast-iron overthrow that includes a lamp bracket for numbers 6A, 6, 7, and 8.
