Description
This is a row of shops and flats built between 1935 and 1936 by George Coles for the Muswell Hill and Harlesden Property Company, a company in which Oscar Deutsch of Odeon Cinemas was a director. The building is attached to the listed Odeon cinema. The ground floor is characterized by black and white faience tiling, while the flats above are constructed with banded brown and red brick, creating a style reminiscent of the contemporary Mount Royal flats by Burnet, Tait and Lorne. The building has a flat, asphalted roof. It contains nine shops with two storeys of flats above, accessed by staircases at the rear. The shops feature curved, projecting ribs between each unit, clad in faience and echoing the design of the adjacent Odeon. The shop fronts are currently obscured by later fascias. The windows are metal with horizontal glazing bars, with some having been replaced with PVC frames at the front. The interiors of the shops and flats were not inspected and are not thought to be of notable interest. The shops and flats contribute significantly to the group value of the site, when viewed alongside the Odeon cinema, which is considered the finest cinema of its type and date in England.
