Description

Bruce Castle is a historic red brick house dating from around 1600, featuring a shallow H-shape with later additions from 1684 and the 18th century. The entrance front has two bays on either side of a projecting square frontispiece from 1684, which includes a stuccoed clock tower that rises above the roof and is topped with a glazed octagon, open drum, and cupola. There are wooden balconies at the second floor, octagon, and drum levels. The side wings have half-octagonal ends, with renewed plaster quoins and bands, and all roofs are concealed by a parapet. The building features 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars set in exposed moulded frames. The central entrance and the window above are framed in Doric and Ionic Orders, respectively. The east wing, built in the late 18th century, is made of plum-coloured brick and has three storeys with eight sash windows under gauged brick arches, along with bands at the first and second floors and ground floor cills. There are three long casements on the left side of the ground floor, and an Ionic doorcase with a pediment in the fourth bay from the right, along with a round arched window above it. The early 18th-century north facade has five bays and two storeys, constructed of pinkish brick, featuring a heavy wooden entablature and pediment cornice with an achievement of arms in the pediment. The recessed sash windows have glazing bars and are set under gauged segmental red brick arches with keystones. The first-floor band rests on the keystones of the arcaded ground floor, which has a stone impost band and finely-gauged red brick arches. A late 19th-century northwest wing has an educational appearance.
