Description

Archway Bridge is a bridge that carries Hornsey Lane over Archway Road. It was designed to replace an earlier brick and stone bridge created in 1813 by John Nash. The current structure is dated 1897, as indicated on a panel at the crown of the arch, and was completed in 1900. It was designed by Sir Alexander Binnie for the London County Council.

The bridge is constructed from Portland stone, steel, and iron. It features Portland stone piers on either side with splayed bases and vermiculated quoins, while the body of the piers is rusticated and vermiculated. The bridge has a segmental-arched span of 120 feet, made of steel and cast iron, adorned with ropemouldings on the archivolt and circular ornamentation with arabesques in the spandrels. A modillion cornice adds to its architectural detail.

At either end, there is a balustrade made of Portland stone piers that support cast iron lamp standards, which were designed by Lewis Vulliamy for the Thames Embankment in the 1860s. The lamp standards on the south-eastern and north-western ends bear the initials of the London County Council, while the other pair features the date 1897. Smaller central piers, which are now painted, have lamp standards flanked by griffins. The intermediate piers are topped with ball and spike finials, with spiked railings in between. The cast-iron panels between the piers display wheel motifs and scrolling ornamentation.
