Description

Cromwell House, built in 1637-1638 for Richard Sprignall, a Captain of Train Bands, is a remarkable example of Renaissance brickwork. The building features two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with seven windows. Its slated mansard roof is adorned with seven dormers, the fourth of which has a segmental pediment. At the center, a balustraded flat roof supports an ogee lead cupola on a tall octagonal drum. The red brick facade showcases rusticated quoins at the corners and sides of the slightly projecting three-bay center. Heavy entablatures are present at the first-floor level and below the parapet. The raised brick eared window architraves include a double-eared architrave for the central first-floor window. The early 19th-century sash windows have glazing bars set in exposed moulded frames. The round-headed door consists of six fielded panels, with the top glazed, framed by a moulded architrave with a curved keyblock. A 18th-century Tuscan doorcase is set on a rusticated stucco panel, while a later addition on the right side features a carriageway.

Inside, there is an impressive staircase in a square well that rises to the second floor. The balustrades are robustly carved with strapwork and military emblems, supported by Ionic column newels featuring carved figures in various military uniforms. The interior retains many original doors and doorcases, carved stone fireplaces, plaster ceilings, and one large room that is completely panelled. Some 18th-century embellishments are present, along with a left rear extension from the 18th century.

Cromwell House, along with its walls, and the adjacent buildings Nos. 106, 106A, 108, 110, and 112, forms a cohesive group.
