Description
Nos. 9-15, Jerdan Place are a group of four early 19th-century terraced houses, later adapted for commercial use. No. 9 was partly rebuilt in 1981 following a fire. The houses are constructed of painted yellow stock brick. They are three storeys high with basements, and have two windows each, except for No. 15, which slightly projects and has three windows. The ground floors now accommodate shops. Nos. 9 and 11 have 20th-century shopfronts. No. 13 features a late 19th-century shopfront with a central entrance having a part-glazed panelled door and overlight, canted bay windows with cast iron columns, capitals, and a fascia bracket. No. 15 has a similar shopfront with moulded stallboards and a pedimented bracket to the fascia on the return. It is possible that earlier shop fronts survive behind the later 20th-century replacements. The upper floors have gauged brick flat arches above recessed sash windows. The first-floor sash window at No. 15 retains its original glazing bars. Parapets conceal mansard roofs. No. 15 has a corniced blocking course. The rear elevations also feature segmental arches above recessed sashes, with first-floor windows retaining original glazing bars. A narrower central sash window at No. 15 lights the stairs; other sashes are similar to the left-hand sashes. Contemporary outbuildings of painted brick adjoin the rears of Nos. 9, 13 and 15. The right-hand roof of the outbuildings at Nos. 13 and 15 is covered with pantiles, while the left-hand side is slated. All buildings have chimney stacks and pots. The interiors were not inspected, but it is believed that No. 15 retains some original features. The houses stand on the former site of Waltham Green, with Jerdan Place originally being the market place and retaining that name until 1877. They are included on the list for their group value, relating to Nos. 17, 17a, and 19 Jerdan Place.
