Description
The Royal Masonic Hospital Nurses' Home is a nurses' residence built between 1938 and 1939, designed by the architectural firm Burnet, Tait and Lorne. The building consists of a long central range flanked by projecting wings, standing four storeys tall with an attic, while the wings are three storeys high. It is constructed from gritty red brick with recessed pointing and features a red tiled roof. The central range has 20 windows, with two central windows flanked by tall chimney stacks. The building includes wooden sash windows with open boxes, and staircases are enclosed in glass towers at the corners. An overhanging flat canopy covers the entrance porch, which curves around the wing, and there are curved windows at each end. The entrance is located where the wing connects to the main block.
Inside, the entrance hall features a curved fire surround set into a travertine-clad wall, complete with a roundel above. The stair balustrades are made of aluminium with horizontal rails, and there is a dado of stone veneer. Wooden sash window frames are present throughout the building, and each floor has access to a balcony. The original games room, known as the 'Elford Room', is located on the ground floor and features walnut veneer panelling, large glazed French windows, a round porthole window, a low rectangular coved ceiling, and a travertine and bronze fireplace. Some original strip light fittings remain, and the room has glass bays on two sides with a wood block floor.
Historically, the Royal Masonic Hospital was constructed between 1933 and 1935, also designed by Burnet, Tait and Lorne. The nurses' home was planned as part of the original project and was added in 1936 to 1938 on an adjacent site, maintaining the same Dudokian modern style.
