Description
The War Memorial at the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury is a significant structure that commemorates those who lost their lives in the Great War from 1914 to 1919. It is set on a two-stepped concrete base, which was formerly enclosed by a railing. Atop the base stands a plain 4-foot stone cross mounted on a 3-foot plinth. The plinth projects forward to the east and is flanked by a wall featuring three stone panels of the same height. The central panel, facing east, bears the following inscription:
THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THIS PARISH TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF THEIR GALLANT KINSFOLK WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 LORD ALL PITYING, JESU BLEST, GRANT THEM THINE ETERNAL REST
Originally, ninety names were inscribed on the other panels, but nearly all of these have become illegible over time.
