Description
The Fulham and South Kensington Institute, also known as the Munster branches, was built between 1890 and 1893 by T J Bailey from the London County Council Architects' Department. Originally serving as Munster Primary School, it features red brick construction with stone dressings and a tiled roof. The building is almost symmetrical, rising to three to four storeys. The central section has seven bays divided by shallow buttresses, with slightly advanced Dutch-gabled wings on either side that contain three bays each. There are four-window wide linking wings. The central block has a battlemented parapet, two dormers, and a central fleche made of timber and lead. The windows are primarily fitted with timber mullions and transoms, featuring small panes with glazing bars. The building is topped with tall chimneys, and the rear facade is also notable. This structure is the most prominently sited and intact of several early schools designed by T J Bailey in the Borough.
