Description
The tomb of George Broad, located approximately 160 metres east of the West Gate in Hammersmith Cemetery, is a monument dating from around 1895. It is made of cast bronze and features a sandstone base. The low, shaped base is topped with a Free Baroque panel that has a richly scrolled top. This panel is adorned with a relief of an angel holding a sword and an inscribed Renaissance shield. Below this, there is another panel that displays a relief of two putti along with the inscription "Requiescat in pace." The monument is signed by A Fabbrucci in the lower left corner.
Historically, George Broad operated a foundry in Hammersmith and was known for casting the famous late Victorian public monument, Eros, created by Alfred Gilbert, for whom Broad also did additional casting work. Aristide Fabbrucci, the sculptor of this tomb, was based in London and is believed to be the son of the Florentine sculptor Luigi Fabbrucci. He is notably recognized for his figure of Commerce, designed for the Glasgow Pavilion of Plastic Arts in 1898.
