Description
The walls and railings to the former Metropolitan Water Board pumping station were built around the 1870s for the New River Company. They are made of stock brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring blue brick plinths, stone capping, and iron railings. The walls consist of brick piers with corbelled tops and pyramidal stone caps, connected by a low brick wall with a blue brick plinth and stone cill beneath iron railings topped with spear heads. The walls run along the east and west sides of Green Lanes, with the listing covering the west side from the K2 kiosk north for 15 bays and the east side from the boundary with 212 Green Lanes north for 13 bays. A section of the wall that continues to the north has been largely rebuilt and is not included in the listing.
Historically, the pumping station was constructed between 1854 and 1856, designed by W. Chadwell Mylne in a picturesque medieval fortress style. The boundary wall and railings first appeared on a map in 1883. This site was originally home to the New River reservoirs from the 1830s, with filter beds added in 1855. The Metropolitan Water Board was established in 1902, taking over the operations of the New River Company.
This listing highlights the well-preserved Victorian brick boundary wall with iron railings, which has significant group value with the Grade II* former Engine House and Ancillary Building.
