Description

These are four pairs of houses, numbered 13 to 20, located on the west side of De Beauvoir Square in Islington. They form part of an early to mid-19th century development originally consisting of five similar blocks, designed in a Tudor-Jacobean style. The houses are constructed of stock brick with stucco dressings. They have high-pitched tiled roofs with grouped diagonal brick chimneys. The gable ends are shaped, with stuccoed copings and brick kneelers. The windows vary in style, some being pointed and set under hoodmoulds. There are square or canted bays on the ground floor, all incorporating decorative lozenge glazing. Each house is two storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has one window in the main block and one in a narrow, set-back entrance bay. Some doorways are situated under four-centred arches. Ground-floor bays are sometimes topped with battlemented parapets. Numbered 1 to 10, 13 to 30 and the railings surrounding the square are designated as a group with No 89 Mortimer Road.
