Description
The Passmore Edwards Free Library, built between 1897 and 1899 by H T Hare, is designed in a modified Renaissance style. It features red brick construction with terracotta dressings and consists of two main storeys, a basement, and a tall double attic storey. The left bay of the building is a tower topped with a pyramidal roof and includes a round staircase turret that is corbelled out at the first floor. Above this, there is a drum, bell-stage, and cupola.
In the upper storey, there is a wide window with column mullions, while smaller windows in baroque surrounds are found elsewhere on the building. The ground floor has a round arched entrance with wrought iron gates. To the right, there are eight windows on the lower floors that are mullioned and transomed, set within eared architraves, and topped with a frieze and cornice, with brick aprons below. The attic storey features two wide gables, each with a wide bow window that has column mullions and an entablature, recessed into the wall, along with a small window positioned high above. The roof descends to eaves level, incorporating dormers.
