Description

This building, now a fitness centre, was originally a school constructed circa 1865-70 as part of the Augustinian Fathers' Mission centre in Hoxton. It is a stock brick structure with red brick bands and some stone dressings, originally topped with a flat roof hidden behind railings that served as a playground. The building has a square plan and stands three storeys high, accommodating boys, girls, and infants, each with their own entrance. The central composition is divided by a projecting buttress clad in black brick, culminating in a cross and surmounted by a narrow gable set between the rooftop railings. Each half of the building is symmetrical, featuring a tall two-light casement window centrally placed, flanked by single, tall casement windows, all with round heads. The lower floor windows have gauged brickwork above, while the second-floor windows have rendered tympanums over the larger openings. Projecting cast-iron downpipes with hopper heads at each end of the building balance the central buttress. Entrance doors are sheltered by porches supported on heavy timber consoles.
