Description
The Priory of the Augustinian Friars, built between 1862 and 1864 by Edward Welby Pugin, is a notable structure located on the north side of Hoxton Square. It is constructed of stock brick, featuring stone and red brick dressings, and has a slate roof with brick stacks on the right. The building has a deep rectangular plan with a three-bay front, three storeys, and attics. The original front door is positioned to the left and features chamfered panels and a brass letterbox. The windows have been replaced but are set in the original round-headed openings, which are not of significant interest. The facade is a carefully composed design, marked by sill bands and hood moulds that extend around the corner of the building.
Inside, the priory retains original joinery in the doors and dadoes, which is of exceptional quality, along with an original staircase that has heavy chamfered newels. To the left, a door connects the priory with St Monica's Church. The priory is included as part of a larger composition that also encompasses the church and school.
