Description
No. 157 High Street is a former terraced house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century and is constructed of white and red brick with stone dressings. The building features a plain tile hipped roof behind a stone-coped parapet and has a shared stack on the south party wall. Below the parapet, there is a brick cornice.
The east front of the building rises three storeys and consists of three bays. The ground storey has been altered with a forward-standing 20th-century shop front. The first and second storeys each contain three windows; the left window on each storey is blind, while the others have late 19th-century sashes set in earlier exposed sash boxes that are flush with the brickwork. All window openings are framed with soft red brick surrounds and gauged brick flat arches featuring keystones.
Inside, there is a 19th-century staircase leading from the ground floor to the first floor. An early 18th-century winder staircase connects the first and second floors, showcasing a closed string, barley sugar twist-on-vase balusters, and a moulded handrail with square-topped newels. The interior is said to retain 18th-century panelling on the ground and first floors, although this is currently boarded over.
