Description
The National Westminster Bank, located at 1 Prince's Street, was built in 1929 by Sir Edwin Cooper. This classical stone building stands five storeys tall with two attics, the upper one being recessed. It features a high channelled base adorned with a Doric frieze and cornice. The façade includes large round-headed vermiculated openings with prominent scrolled keystones and rectangular niches that house statues. Above the cornice, there is a mezzanine level. The building has channelled antae on each of the five storeys, with recessed five-bay centres flanked by giant detached Corinthian columns, topped with a bracketed cornice. The plain attic storey has a simple parapet, while the high recessed upper attic showcases a band of swag decoration and simple coping. At the corner of Prince's Street and Mansion House Street, there is a statuary group of five figures. Additionally, at the corner of St Mildred's Court, there is a City Corporation plaque commemorating Mrs. Elizabeth Fry, a prison reformer who lived there from 1800 to 1809.
