Description
33 and 35 Eastcheap, EC3, is a notable commercial building designed in 1868 by R L Roumieu. It features a striking Gothic style, constructed from red and black brick with painted dressings. The building stands five storeys tall, plus an additional storey within a slated roof. The ground floor has an enriched, arched doorway and a respond from another opening, although much of it has been altered for shop use. Above, the three storeys are arranged in three bays, unified vertically by shafting, canopies, and arcading. The design includes two arched gables and a central enriched dormer, flanked by two smaller dormers higher up. The building is topped with cast-iron cresting. It is considered one of the most remarkable and dramatic examples of Gothic style in a commercial context, creating a sensation at the time of its completion and receiving extensive coverage in the building press, including 'The Building News' on 25 September 1868.
