Description

No 9 Carmelite Street is an office block built between 1893 and 1894 by architects H A Hunt and H T Steward for the Board of Conservators of the River Thames. Constructed by George Trollope & Sons, the building features red brick with stone dressings in the Tudor Gothic style and has a slate roof with tall chimney stacks. It stands five storeys high with a basement and has seven windows plus one return window facing Victoria Embankment, where the ground floor is obscured by a late 20th-century extension to Sion College.

The central Gothic entrance is highlighted by a moulded ogee arch adorned with finely carved stone insets, including grotesque masks and armorial devices. The entrance has double panelled doors that are half glazed with tracery, accompanied by a traceried fanlight. To the left, there is a wide elliptical arch above the basement entrance, featuring a fine wrought iron screen and gate designed in a quatrefoil pattern. The building primarily has square-headed transom and mullion windows with hoodmoulds, arranged in a pattern of 3:3:2:3:2:3:3 lights, with some windows having pointed and cusped heads.

The end bays of the building slightly project, with the right-hand bay showcasing two double-height three-light traceried windows with enriched lintels spanning the first and second floors, and a cartouche dated 1893 positioned between the segmental arched windows on the fourth floor. The brick parapet features small pediments on the end bays, while the central bay has a larger parapet and a finial. The return to Embankment includes a double-height five-light traceried oriel window with an enriched lintel, a gable with a small window, and a figurative finial. The design of this building was influenced by the City Lands Committee, which controlled development for the City Corporation, ensuring its similarity to Sion College. No 9 Carmelite Street is part of a group with Sion College on Victoria Embankment.
