1750 to 59 by James Gibbs. Formal composition round three sides of courtyard. Refaced with Portland stone in C19. 3 storeys plus basement and slated mansard. Quoins, bands, dressings to windows, modillion cornice and crowning balustrade. Central 3 bays rusticated with arched entrance and carriageway through main block which has short, 3 window wings, and good area railings. Interior of north block contains good timber staircase with important wall painting by W Hogarth. Also very fine hall, with enriched plaster work etc. Interiors of east and west wing contain original staircases and other fittings.
