Description
St Bartholomew's Hospital consists of the Main North Block, East Block, and West Block, built between 1750 and 1759 by architect James Gibbs. The building has a formal layout around three sides of a courtyard and was refaced with Portland stone in the 19th century. It features three storeys plus a basement and a slated mansard roof. Architectural details include quoins, bands, window dressings, a modillion cornice, and a crowning balustrade. The central three bays are rusticated and include an arched entrance with a carriageway through the main block, which has short wings with three windows each and attractive area railings.
Inside the North Block, there is a notable timber staircase and an important wall painting by William Hogarth. The hall is particularly impressive, showcasing enriched plasterwork. The interiors of the East and West Blocks retain original staircases and other fittings.
