Description

This building, located at 69 Upper Thames Street, is a Grade II listed office constructed in 1911 by architects Thomas Collcutt and Stanley Hamp. It features a stone exterior with a granite podium and is designed in a monumental classical style, primarily symmetrical in layout. The structure consists of five storeys and an attic, with a total of eighteen bays. The building has a distinctive folding shape along its axis, with wings that bend slightly backward.

A giant niche is positioned above the central entrance, which displays the date of construction, while a small pediment crowns the attic. The end pavilions, each comprising three bays, are slightly advanced and adorned with giant Corinthian pilasters. These pavilions have roofs and small open pediments at their attics, decorated with rich sculptural details. The third floor features oriel windows set within arches, and the architraves of the flanking windows are embellished with Ionic volutes.

The six intervening bays are marked by giant Ionic columns, and the first floor has pedimented oriels with concave sides. Round arches sit above heavy cornices on the second and fourth floors. To the right, there is a return with a pedimented entrance set in a concave corner, showcasing additional rich sculptural details. The original metal doors and balustrades remain intact. The interior has not been seen. This description includes No. 69 Upper Thames Street.
