Description
The Institute of Actuaries consists of three terraced chambers that form the western side of a courtyard, with No. 2 featuring a return to the garden. Built between 1757 and 1759, the building was restored in the late 19th century and externally rebuilt in a facsimile around 1955 by Edward Maufe due to war damage. It is constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings and features a moulded brick cornice at the second floor level. The roof is a tiled mansard with dormers. The structure has three storeys, an attic, and a basement (only in Nos 2 and 3). No. 1 has four windows and a two-window return to the gardens, No. 2 has five windows, and No. 3 has three windows. The entrances are adorned with stone surrounds featuring a pulvinated frieze (with an apron tablet above the center) and a cornice topped with a ball. The windows have gauged red brick flat arches and flush frame sashes. A parapet is present, along with lead rainwater pipes and heads inscribed with the year 1954. Although the interiors were not inspected, No. 1 is noted to retain the council chamber, reading room, library, and lecture rooms of the Institute of Actuaries. Additionally, there are attached cast iron railings to the areas of Nos 2 and 3. Staple Inn has been part of the City of London since April 1, 1994.
