Description

9 and 10 Staple Inn are two terraced chambers located on the south side of a courtyard, featuring an arched passage that leads to gardens. No. 9 was built in 1729, while No. 10 was constructed in 1747. Both buildings were restored in the late 19th century and were rebuilt externally in a similar style around 1955 by Edward Maufe due to war damage. They are made of brown brick with red brick dressings. No. 9 has plain brick bands at the floor levels, while No. 10 features a moulded brick cornice at the second floor level. The buildings have tiled mansard roofs with dormers, and they rise three storeys high, including attics and basements, with five windows each.

The entrances have stone surrounds with a pulvinated frieze and an apron tablet above the center, topped with a cornice and a ball. The doorways are approached by steps with railings. The windows have gauged red brick flat arches for flush frame sashes, with No. 9 displaying segmental arches. Both buildings have parapets. The interior was not inspected, but No. 9 has a similar south facade with four windows and a lead rainwater pipe and head inscribed 1954, adjacent to No. 10. Staple Inn has been part of the City of London since April 1, 1994.
