Description
Nos 1 and 2 Laurence Pountney Hill, dated 1703, are a pair of houses with three storeys, a high basement, and dormers on an altered roof. They are constructed of red brick with moulded bands. The buildings feature an elaborate eaves cornice with brackets and carved mouldings. The doorcases at mezzanine level are exceptionally rich, with brackets that support a curved hood. No 2 is largely rebuilt to match No 1, which has two windows plus two additional windows set forward at the front and back. The north return has a mansard gable and an altered, stuccoed basement. The rear wing has a simpler bracketed cornice and a plain modillion cornice on the higher main face, with cambered window arches, a small closet wing, and various alterations. There is a good original staircase in the building. While No 2 is entirely rebuilt internally and at the rear, the bay containing the entrance door remains original.
