Description

This is a terrace of six shops with accommodation above, built around 1822 by Thomas Cubitt and restored in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of stucco and features wooden shopfronts.

The exterior consists of three storeys and cellars, with each shop having one window. The party walls of the upper floors are highlighted by narrow recessed bays. The shopfronts, which have been largely restored, include pilasters that support a continuous entablature adorned with anthemion and palmette decorations on the architrave. The projecting, bracketed shop windows have rounded angles and small panes, accompanied by panelled and half-glazed doors with overlights. On the upper floors, the segmental-arched windows are framed by plain architraves decorated with paterae; the first floor features four lights with cast-iron balconies, while the second floor has tripartite windows. The parapets have plain bands, with nos. 3 and 5 displaying shallow scrolled pediments above.

The interiors were not inspected. Notably, No. 5 was the residence of William Butler Yeats, the Irish poet and dramatist, as indicated by a plaque. Thomas Cubitt played a significant role in the development of the Bedford Estate to the north and east of Russell Square. The original shopfronts in Woburn Walk and Duke's Road form a coherently designed group that represents an exceptional architectural composition and survival.
